The third session of the WHO Pandemic Hub’s speaker series “Complexity of Pandemics” is a special edition which will be hosted at this year’s Global Technical Meeting of the Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) initiative in Luxor, Egypt on 27 November 2022.

About the event:

The speaker series takes place quarterly and is convened by the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence to discuss challenges and cutting-edge research and technology in global pandemic preparedness and response. The goal of the series is to highlight the complex multidisciplinary landscape of preventing, predicting, preparing for and responding to epidemics and pandemics. The event series is streamed worldwide for online attendance via the World Health Organization's YouTube channel.

This third session of the speaker series is a special edition, as it takes place at this year’s Global Technical Meeting of the collaborative Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) initiative. It discusses how innovative and emerging technologies - in the public health intelligence space and beyond - can be leveraged to embrace the complexity of pandemics and enhance collaboration for better pandemic preparedness and response. Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu sets the scene, speaking on innovations relevant to the work of the WHO Pandemic Hub. Our keynote speaker, Prof Dirk Brockmann – complexity scientist and computational epidemiologist – speaks on recent innovations in his field. Afterwards, we hear comments from two public health practitioners on technology applications in their daily work: Dr Nada Ghosn comments on gaps and needs in technology application in the public sector based on her experiences leading the Epidemiological Surveillance Programme at the Ministry of Health in Lebanon. Dr Tetuh Mercy Kyeng draws on her experiences working in the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in building capacities for member states on event-based surveillance. The event is moderated by Dr Philip Abdelmalik, WHO Head of the Intelligence Innovation and Integration Unit which hosts and leads the EIOS initiative.
